People are so caught up with the whole September 11th attacks that they sometimes forget about the bio terrorist attacks that followed a few weeks later.
The months following the World Trade Center attacks were an incredibly crazy time for New York City. I think it was about 7 or 8 weeks later when news broke that headquarters of NBC at Rockefeller Center, had just been the site of an Anthrax attack, via the mail. The company I worked for at the time, the too big to fail Lehman Brothers (sigh), had temporarily been moved uptown and was just a couple of blocks away from "30 Rock." An announcement was made about the discovery at work, and we were told that even though we were still within trading hours, we were free to leave work if we so desired.
Some visibly nervous and upset co-workers did take advantage of the offer and went home.
I mention this because I came across a New York Times article that appears on MSNBC about how there is a belief that the man who was eventually arrested for this crime, may have in fact, been innocent. I wasn't surprised when I read the story, but not because I never believed they had the wrong man. There was some evidence and the suspect, Bruce Ivens, did commit suicide a few days before being charged with the attacks, which seemed to bloster the case against him.
However, the government does have a history of going after the wrong suspect, sometimes to appease a blood-thirsty public, which is what may have happened here.
Anyone remember Richard Jewell?
Anyway, check out the article and see what you think.
