. . . San Francisco.
Are you shocked?
Anyway, this vintage Coca-Cola sign was discovered under some siding when the Bernal Heights neighborhood building it was painted on was being remodeled. Believed to have been painted around 1930, the owner of the building had planned to restore the sign to its former glory.
However, the NIMBY'ers decided they wanted something different.
"Neighborhood activists" took it upon themselves to declare that this historically significant ad be painted over because it violated San Francisco's anti-billboard laws. They also complained that it promoted obesity by advertising a sugary drink to kids who attend a nearby elementary school.
WTF?
The owner was forced to go through a planning commission hearing for permission to keep the sign where it was. He did eventually win a conditional use permit (by a unanimous vote, I might add), which allows the sign to remain.
Way to choose your battles, folks.
