BP announced it has reached a settlement with fisherman, cleanup workers who were sickened during the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The amount of the settlement is $7.8 billion.
Okay, lets break this down. The oil company responsible for one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. History has so far spent $22 billion, including paying out more than $8.1 billion to individuals, businesses and government entities and $14 billion on "operational response."
BP recently reported 2011 profits of $40 billion, $7.7 billion alone in the last quarter. It recently raised its dividend to shareholders by 14 percent.
Sounds like they're getting off pretty cheap, if you ask me, considering only an estimated 8% of the 172 million gallons of oil spilled was cleaned up.
