With inspiration taken from The British Museum's BBC radio show and book, A History of the World in 100 Objects, the New York Times managed to come up with, along with the help of city historians and curators, its own list of 50 objects that tell the history of New York City.

While there are some items that probably should have been included on the list, like a pigeon, a slice of pizza, a subway map, or perhaps something from the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory (all items that were correctly called out by reader comments), it's still an impressive and evocative collection of all things New York, and worth checking out.
