TRIBUTE

I'm not too ashamed to admit my fondness for the 1974 classic The Way We Were.

Okay, who's kidding who, here. I fucking love this movie!

Anyway, the score was written by Marvin Hamlisch, who passed away overnight at 68. When the film was in the final editing stage, Marvin felt the moment where Hubbell and Katie (Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand) embrace one final time, needed some strings. Because of the added expense of bringing in musicians for a second time, the studio said no. With his own money, Marvin brought back those musicians, recorded 30 seconds of strings (skip to 3:05), and created a moment that is both iconic and doubly-poignant.

I can't imagine this scene without those 30 seconds of music.

Thanks, Marvin. You did real good.
