I wasn't too far into Just Kids, by Patti Smith, when it hit me that I wasn't just holding a book in my hand . . .
. . . I was holding a piece of art.
Smith's rememberence of her close friendship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe was not only the best book I read this year, it is probably the finest book I have ever read.
