THE PEOPLE VS. COURTNEY LOVE

Rock star, actress, and hot mess Courtney Love recently offered an out-of-court settlement to a designer that claimed she was defamed and lost business after a spat of Twitter messages from Love.

The settlement with Dawn Simorangkir (Boudoir Queen) will cost Love about $430,000. One of the "defaming" tweets said that Simorangkir was an "asswipe nasty lying hosebag thief."

That is kind of funny, actually. I didn't know that hosebag was a word still in use.

That said, what I find most interesting about this is that Love lost this case (well, sort of, she did settle), while the Westboro Baptist Church recently had the Supreme Court rule in their favour regarding actions that I think are similar. I mean, both are Free Speech issues, right?

Am I right, am I wrong? What do you think?

  1. It's two different issues. The Supreme Court upheld Westboro's right to say offensive things. Love was sued for the content of her statements not her right to say them.

You could say that the Supreme Court also upheld Love's right to say things that could get her sued. Next step against Westboro could be to sue them for the content of their messages, if there's a case there. The Supreme Court supports the RIGHT to defame people, which could get you sued.
