TARDY TO THE PARTY - THE MIRACLE WORKER

The Oscar winners for 1962 - Gregory Peck for To Kill A Mockingbird, Patty Duke for The Miracle Worker, Ed Begley, Sr. for Sweet Bird Of Youth. Joan Crawford accepted the Best Actress Oscar on behalf of Anne Bancroft for The Miracle Worker, who was performing on Broadway that night and could not attend the ceremonies in Hollywood.

I can't even imagine how physically and emotionally exhausting performing this role eight times a week on Broadway must have been for a 12-year old Patty Duke. She not only won the Tony, but she also won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress when the play was adapted for the screen, making her the youngest actress (age 14) win a competitive Oscar, until a 9-year old Tatum O'Neal won for Paper Moon.

The Miracle Worker is an amazing film that still packs a punch, nearly 50 years after it's initial release. It's also amazing that when I sat down to watch this film a few weeks ago, it was my first time doing so.
